Building codes across most DFW municipalities now strictly adhere to the International Residential Code (IRC) regarding drip edge installation. While older homes may lack this feature, current standards require it for all new roof installations and full replacements.
The drip edge is a non-corrosive metal flashing applied to the edges of the roof. Its primary purpose is to direct water away from the fascia and into the gutters, protecting the underlying wood components from rot and moisture infiltration.
Key Installation Standards
- The metal must be extended at least 2 inches onto the roof deck.
- It must wrap over the edge of the roof and extend down a minimum of 0.25 inches below the sheathing.
- Underlayment should be installed over the drip edge at the eaves and under the drip edge at the rakes.
Insurance carriers are generally required to cover the cost of drip edge installation during a full replacement if the local municipality has formally adopted the IRC or a similar code. This is typically processed under the 'Law and Ordinance' or 'Code Upgrade' provision of a standard policy.
