Texas Building Code Requirements for Drip Edge Installation

Proper drip edge installation is now a standard requirement under the International Residential Code adopted by most DFW municipalities.

For many years, drip edge installation was considered an optional add-on by some roofing contractors in Texas. However, under the 2021 International Residential Code (IRC), which has been adopted by a majority of cities in the North Texas region, the installation of a drip edge is a mandatory requirement.

The primary purpose of the drip edge is to direct water away from the fascia and into the gutter system. Without it, water can seep behind the gutter, leading to rotted wood, mold, and foundation issues over time.

IRC Section R905.2.8.5

This specific code section dictates that the drip edge must be applied to both the eaves and the rakes of the roof. It should be fastened under the underlayment at the eaves and over the underlayment at the rakes to ensure maximum water shedding efficiency.

When filing an insurance claim for storm damage, it is important to ensure the estimate includes code-compliant drip edge installation. Most 'Replacement Cost Value' (RCV) policies cover these upgrades if the local municipality has officially adopted the latest building codes.
