Enhanced Wind Speed Requirements in North Texas Building Codes

As North Texas municipalities adopt updated versions of the International Residential Code (IRC), there is a renewed focus on wind resistance. High-wind events, even those without hail, remain a primary cause of roofing failure in the DFW area.

Standard installation typically requires four nails per shingle. However, to meet the 110-mph to 130-mph wind speed ratings now common in local codes, many manufacturers and city inspectors now require a six-nail 'high wind' fastening pattern.

Proper nail placement is equally as important as the quantity. Nails must be driven straight and flush into the 'common bond' area of the shingle. High-nailing or over-driving with pneumatic tools can void the manufacturer warranty and fail a city inspection.

Adjusters and contractors are paying closer attention to these details during the appraisal process. If a roof was not installed to these specifications during its last replacement, it may be more susceptible to shingle blow-offs during the seasonal transition into autumn.
