August in the DFW metroplex is typically characterized by extreme heat, but recent atmospheric instability has led to a rise in localized convective storms. These 'pop-up' storms are capable of producing high wind gusts and isolated hail without the warning time of major spring fronts.

Thermal heating during the day creates significant updrafts. When these cells collapse, they can produce microbursts that cause shingle uplift and seal failure on older roofing systems.

Property owners are encouraged to perform visual inspections from the ground following high-wind events. Indicators of damage include:

  • Displaced or missing shingles on the ridges and rakes.
  • Granule loss accumulating at the base of downspouts.
  • Dented metal components, such as attic vents or soft-metal flashing.

Maintaining a record of the roof's condition before and after these late-summer spikes is helpful for documentation should a formal insurance claim become necessary.
