Adjusters don't open claims based on the storm — they open them based on the damage. Knowing what each hail size does helps you describe what you're seeing and decide whether to file.
Sub-1" (pea to marble)
Usually cosmetic. May knock loose granules on older shingles but rarely creates functional damage. Most carriers will not pay for cosmetic-only damage unless your policy has a cosmetic endorsement.
1"–1.5" (quarter to ping pong)
Borderline. Newer shingles often survive intact; older or brittle shingles begin showing bruising, fractured mat, and accelerated granule loss. This is the size range where a professional inspection matters.
1.5"–2" (ping pong to golf ball)
Almost always functional damage on asphalt shingles. Bruises visible in chalk tests, fractured mat under granule loss, compromised seal strips. Claim territory.
2"+ (golf ball to baseball)
Full slope replacements are the norm. Soft metals (gutters, vents, flashing) show clear impacts. Even Class 4 shingles can show damage above 2.5" depending on impact angle.
What we tell homeowners
If hail at your address measured 1" or larger, get a professional inspection. Free, no obligation. Documentation early is always better than a claim window that closes in 12–24 months.
